At the 2nd level of Adding Fractions, you do addition with non-equivalent fractions. That means there are 2 parts to solving the sum. First the fractions need to be made equivalent, and then they can be added. And make sure you check whether the fraction can be simplified.

First we check whether the denominators are the same. No, they're not the same and can't be added immediately.
Now we need to make sure the denominators are the same, make them equivalent. We can change the denominator 2 into 4 by multiplying it by 2.
This gives us the following sum 24 + 14
Now we can add the numerators. 2 + 1 = 3 so the answer is 34

Can we simplify the fraction? No, the fraction can't be simplified. The answer remains 12 + 14 = 34

Example 2:514 + 12
We first check if the denominators are equivalent. No, the fractions aren't equivalent.
Now we need to make sure the denominators are the same, make them equivalent. We can change the denominator 2 into 14 by multiplying it by 7.
This gives us the following sum 514 + 714
Now that the denominators are equal, we can add the numerators. 5 + 7 = 12 so the answer is 1214

Can we simplify the fraction? Yes, that's possible. 1214 = 67. The answer is 514 + 12 = 67
